A visit to the famous Blue Lagoon, the geothermal spa is a must. It is the most popular day trip included in Reykjanes day trip. Its surroundings alone is beautiful and spectacular 800 years old lava field. It is one of the world most famous attraction, an incredible experience to bath.

The warm water (37° C to 40° C) is a geothermal seawater which originates at 2000 meters below surface of the earth. When flowing to the earth surface due to pressure, it takes substances like silica, algae, and some minerals which are all proved to have positive impact for your skin.

The tour to the Blue Lagoon can be selected as a full day trip, a half day trip or simply as a layover destination during your stopover at Keflavik airport. All depending on your available time, and what else you like to see or explore during your time. Many other interesting places can be seen or explored in the Reykjanes surrounding, such as he geothermal site in Reykjanes, where you find the famous Gunnuhver, and beautiful lighthouse located at the coast with interesting bird watching during summer time. The most popular one is the big Church of Hallgrímur, and then it is worth visiting the sculpture museum of Asmundur Sveinson and Einar Jónsson, and the Reykjavík Art Museum. The city pond with the bird life and with its city hall which was built into the pond in 1992. If you fancy a bath or swimming in one of the many geothermal swimming pools, then that is a very good option, but then we must add time into the program.  The pearl is a popular destination with its great view over the city, not to mention the interesting museums and restaurants inside the building which is constructed on five big geothermal tanks.

If you have limited time, and not able to travel outside Reykjavik, then we recommend including in the program a visit to “Fly over Iceland" which is a simulation tour in a helicopter over some beautiful natural wonders of Iceland.

The eruption started on the 19th of March 2021. It was very soon a very popular destination for both Icelanders and tourist visiting Iceland. The eruption at Reykjanes peninsula has not been active since September 2021. But in spite of that, it is still a popular destination to visit, mainly to see the new lava and the new crater. 

We will take you on a hiking tour to the hot lava with a view over the new crater. The hiking tour can be organized from an easy 1 hour hike up to more difficult 3 hours hiking tour, depending on your available time, ability and willingness to walk up mountains.  It takes only half an hour drive from the airport to the starting point of the hiking tour.  This is definitely once in a lifetime experience, which you will never forget.

In Iceland we have around 20 volcanic eruptions every century, which means that volcanic eruption occurs every 4to 5 year. Why do we have so many volcanic eruptions in Iceland?  This is because of the location of our island in the North Atlantic Ocean.  The Mid-Atlantic ridge lays under our country, and we have a hot spot (magma plume) also beneath our feet.  This hot spot is little by little moving towards east.  Now it is under our biggest glacier in Iceland, named Vatnajökull.  Therefore, we do have a lot of eruptions in that area.

Geologist usually group volcanos into three different types of eruptions.  One is effusion eruption or the Hawaii type were you have very hot lava flowing very freely with basic magma. It contains rather low amount of gas and the magma forms pahoehoe lava. then you have the Stromboli type which has higher acid magma or more like a explosion type.  The third type we name Vulcanian (explosive) eruptions (like the eruption in Eyjafallajökull in 2010) either taking place under glacier or in the ocean where the magma get in contact with water. All of those types exist in Iceland depending on where the eruptions take place.  But there are other more catastrophic type of eruptions called Pelée and Plinisk (Tambora).  Sometimes (in Pliny eruptions) part of the eruption’s plume may collapse and and generate a hot pyroclastic flow which collapses onto the side of the volcano like an avalanche.

Finally we may experience a combination of different type of eruptions, which depends on the development of the eruption.

The biggest volcanic eruption in Iceland measured in terms of lava happened before the Vikings came here some 1100 years ago.  It was Þjórsárhraun which covered 950m2 of our country some 8700 years ago, but still the Viking witnessed a very big volcanic eruption in Eldgjá which took place in the year 989.  That covered the land with new lava over 800 km2.  That eruption came from a volcanic system we name “KATLA”.

The biggest eruption in the last centuries was Skáftáreldar which happened in the year 1783, which came from a Volcanic system Lakagígar.  That caused a lot of damage, not only close to the eruptions but also further away from the origin.  Lot of ash moved up in the atmosphere kilometers up, and affected European countries in the way blocking the sun from longer periods. It has been said that this led to the French revolution few year later.

Still, most of visitors drive straight to the city without experiencing the beautiful magic scenery of the youngest part of Iceland. This is very interesting place seen from a geological point.  The landscape is rough and a bit alien looking.  Not much grass, but mostly lava field covered with moss.  In fact, everywhere you look, no matter in what direction, lava fields stretch to the horizon.  What we will find here are lot of high geothermal activity, Fissures, lava cracks, tectonic faults, volcanic craters, bubbling geysers, geothermal mud pools, lava fields, caves

The Peninsula is perhaps one of the most underrated places in Iceland.  Since November 2015, this area at Reykjanes Peninsula is known as UNESCO Global Geopark 829 km2

The most famous attraction in this area is the Blue Lagoon.  But today we should add the current volcanic eruptions which started on the 19th of March when a fissure opened following frequent earthquakes the weeks before. The last eruption took place in the peninsula some 800 years ago.  Initially scientists predicted that the eruption would erupt for days and perhaps few weeks, but it is still active and massive magma is still pouring out of one of the volcanic cones.  Now scientists are predicting that it may last long time and create a shield volcano mountain.  There is a unique opportunity to see where the Atlantic Ridge rises above sea level displaying various forms of volcanic activity which has shaped this peninsula.  You will be able to see the boundaries between Europe and America, where the ocean plates drift away from each other.  You literally can walk over a bridge, between the tectonic plates dividing Europe from North America. 

By the sea, there are many places with amazing rock formation astonishing cliffs, most of them dark grey. Additionally, you may see some colonies of sea birds, black sand and beaches.

A visit to the “High temperature” Geothermal areas, the famous hot spring “Gunnuhver”, Lighthouse if very popular. High geothermal areas have several characters.  The main features are diversity on colors. The clay gives a brown and white color, the fool’s gold seems dark grey, the Sulphur has a beautiful yellow texture, and the copper amalgamation are blue green. Fumaroles are common on the peninsula, and they sometimes erupt with blue grey clay splatters.

The high temperature geothermal energy resources is harvested in the peninsula both by producing electricity around 175 MW and for district heating of all houses on the peninsula.  Interesting development which started in the eighties utilizing the renewable and environment friendly energy.

If you have extra time, then we have several options to visit other location at the Reykjanes peninsula, such as the geothermal site at Seltún. There you will see the colored soil which is bright yellow, red, and green caused by iron oxidation, Sulphur and calcite precipitation. In the 18th century the Sulphur deposits were mined in this location and exported as a valuable commodity, which was mainly used for gun powder.

Other interesting sites are the geothermal site in Reykjanes, where you find the famous Gunnuhver, and beautiful lighthouse located at the coast with interesting bird watching at the same time.

The city pond is an iconic spot (a small shallow lake) situated in the central Reykjavik, next to the city hall (built in 1992). Many different species of birds can be seen on the lake or up to 50 types. Just to mention few then you will always see Graylag goose, Eider ducks, Mallards, Artic tern, Swans, and some seabirds. It has for a long time been popular to feed the birds with bread.

With minor adjustments to the classic Golden Circle tour, then we can concentrate on Geothermal Energy and learn more about this interesting energy source in Iceland.  And at the same time experiencing the impressive natural attractions inside the “Golden circle”.

Geothermal Energy has been used in areas with obvious surface manifestations of activity close to tectonic boundaries in the world. Due to the location of Iceland in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, then the country has an abundance of geothermal energy, which can be seen and witnessed during the golden circle tour.  We will visit the newest geothermal power plant in Hellisheidi and learn how it works. We will see “Direct use” of geothermal in the area means space and district heating (used to heat up our geothermal swimming pools), greenhouse heating and aquaculture. We will therefore see how the geothermal energy is used in horticultural activity, and we will bath and swim (unless not wanted) in geothermal pools.  Geothermal surface features, the famous hot spring area Geysir will be visited where we will see the bubbling geothermal hot springs and Strokkur who spouts water 30 meters (100ft) into the air every 5 to 10-minute interval.

You can choose two options and bath in geothermal water, either the Secret Lagoon at Flúdir or at the Fontana geothermal bath in Laugarvatn.  The tour ends at the historic site Thingvellir national park, where we will wrap up the understanding of the geothermal activity in Iceland.  Here you can see how the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, but they are very much visible in Thingvellir.  You will clearly see how the mid-Atlantic rift is drifting apart at the rate of 2 centimeters every year.

Even though Icelanders claim to be a pioneer in utilizing geothermal for space heating, then historically this can be dated back to the first century in the city of Pompeii in Italy.  Our historic writer, politician and poet, Snorri Sturluson used geothermal bath in the 13th century, and it is claimed that he also used the hot water to heat up his turf house.  Then the French people in the city of Chaudes-Aigues installed a district heating system in the 14th Century.  Geothermal is an enormously interesting option which you will learn a lot about on this tour.

It can be stated that Icelanders are pioneers utilizing geothermal energy for space heating and bathing in hot natural pools and swimming pools.

What is “geothermal energy”?

Geothermal energy is thermal energy which is generated and stored within the Earth.  In very basic terms, then the geothermal gradient highlights the increase in temperature per 100 m of depth – around 2-3 degrees Celsius. You might assume that the temperature will reach around 60° C (140¨F) at the depth of 2000 meters and around 90° C (194° F) at 3000-meter depth.  This temperature trend continues a few thousand meters deeper. However, this is very different depending on where you are in the world.  Iceland for example, is located in between two tectonic plates (North American and Eurasian).  Where these tectonic plates meet, the heat of the earth can be found closer to the surface, and volcanic activity is common. This means we have an abundance of high temperature areas which can be found in a few places in Iceland, meaning that the temperature gradient is many times the average value. In this Golden Circle tour we will have a view (or visit) to either Hellisheidar power plant (303 MWe and 200 MWth) or Nesjavallar power plant (120 MWe and 300 MWth)

The most popular tourist attraction in Iceland can be witnessed during this tour.  The tour links some of the country’s most impressive natural attractions, Gullfoss, Geysir and Thingvellir in one day. Experience the most beautiful Waterfall in Iceland named Gullfoss (translated Golden waterfall), and the bubbling geothermal hot springs at Geysir area. We will visit the horticulture tomato cultivation at Fridheimar with an option to have a short lunch break tasting the tomato soup at their restaurant or drink the famous bloody Mary. We will end the classic circle be visiting the world first parliament in Thingvellir National Park founded in the year 930 and explore at the same place the tectonic plates which separate North America and Europe. Thingvellir is UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fissures have been moving apart at the rate of 2 centimeters every year which gives the fissure spectacular appearance. Here you will also see the amazing clear glacier water which can be found in some fissures which opened in the year 1789
